How to read the chart

Each Chinese zodiac year starts at Lunar New Year, which falls between 21 January and 20 February, not on 1 January. If you were born in January or early February, check the start date next to your birth year: you may belong to the year before. The element follows the last digit of the year (0–1 Metal, 2–3 Water, 4–5 Wood, 6–7 Fire, 8–9 Earth), and even years are Yang, odd years Yin.

Frequently asked questions

How do I find my Chinese zodiac by birth year?

Find your birth year in the chart. If you were born before that year's start date (January or early February), take the previous year's animal.

Why does my Chinese zodiac not match my birth year?

Because the zodiac year starts at Lunar New Year, between 21 January and 20 February. Early-year birthdays belong to the previous animal.

What is the Chinese zodiac for 2027?

2027 is the Year of the Fire Goat (Ding-wei), from 6 February 2027 to 25 January 2028.
