Zodiac Compatibility Guide: Who Matches Who
One of the most popular reasons people look up their Chinese zodiac sign is to check compatibility — with a partner, a friend, or a business partner. Traditional zodiac compatibility is built around two ideas: "triangles" of signs that naturally support each other, and direct "clashes" between signs positioned opposite one another on the zodiac wheel.
The Four Compatibility Triangles
The 12 animals are grouped into four sets of three, and signs within the same group are considered naturally harmonious:
Rat, Dragon, Monkey — ambitious, quick-thinking, and action-oriented.
Ox, Snake, Rooster — patient, detail-focused, and hard-working.
Tiger, Horse, Dog — independent, loyal, and energetic.
Rabbit, Goat, Pig — gentle, artistic, and relationship-focused.
People within the same triangle often describe feeling instantly comfortable with each other, since they tend to share a similar pace and approach to life.
The Six Zodiac Clashes
Each animal also has one "clash" partner, positioned directly opposite it on the 12-year wheel: Rat–Horse, Ox–Goat, Tiger–Monkey, Rabbit–Rooster, Dragon–Dog, and Snake–Pig. A clash doesn't mean the relationship is doomed — it simply means the two signs approach life differently enough that extra communication and patience are usually needed.
Compatibility Isn't Destiny
It's worth being honest about the limits of this system: two people from "clashing" signs can have wonderful relationships, and two people from the same triangle can still struggle if other factors in the relationship aren't working. Zodiac compatibility is best used as a conversation starter or a bit of fun insight — not a reason to avoid getting to know someone.
